Vd. Pankaj Chhayani: There are different theories of
Physiology of sleep.
In brain
stem, ascending and descending fibres cross to each other and makes Reticular
formation (RAS- Reticular activating system). RAS acts like switch for Cerebral
cortex(and ultimately consciousness).
When RAS is activated, person switch on
from sleep to awakening state.
According to modern science, RAS gets exhausted at the end of day and Person feels sleepy.
Ayurveda describes Nidra almost same way-" When the mind including sensory
and motor organs is exhausted and they dissociate themselves from their
objects, then the individual sleeps".
Charaka and
Susruta have given five etiological factors of Anidra. 1)CHARAKA:- Karya, Kala, Vikara, Prakruti and Vayu. 2) SUSRUTA:- Vayu, pita, Kshaya, Manastapa,
Abhighata.
Nidra is
essential parameter to assess Dhatusamya/Dhatuvaishamya.

Vd. Dhruti Kagrana: Nindra is one of the life maintaining factors
and if not used properly several fatal diseases may produce. But if it is
practiced according to prescribed regiment it provides ‘sukh’ which is
considered as arogya (disease free state) in ayurvedic classics. Nidra has been
considered as brihana factors (nourishing factors) in routine life means it
promotes health by nourishing dhatus and increasing kapha which is responsible
for the strength and immunity of thebody as well as mind. Increased kapha
promotes physical health and immunity are promoted by sthirita(stability),
snigdhata(unuctousness) and guruta(heaviness) while mental health and immunity
are promoted by kshama(forgiveness), dhrit(steadiness) and Alobha
(contentment), which are the functions of kapha in normal state on the other
hand, nidra also promotes health by increasing shukra dhatu, essence of the
body and the same affects as like kapha.
PHYSIOLOGY OF NIDRA:
According to
acharya Caraka, when the mana including indriyas is exhausted and thus they
dissociate
themselves
from their objects, the individual sleeps.When the mana (as well as the soul)
gets exhaused or
becomes
inactive and the gyanendriyas and karmendriyas become inactive then the
individual gets sleep.
Acharya
Susruta said qbout the physiology of nidra that hridaya is the seat of chetna
in living being. When
this is
invaded by tamo guna, persons are subjected to nidra. Tamoguna is the cause of
sleep and satva guna
is the cause
of awakening but overall, nature itself is more dominant cause.

According to
Caraka, sukha, dukha, pusti, karshya, bala, abala, vrushata, klibata, gnyanam,
agnyana (ignorance), jivana and death all these occure depending on the proper
or improper nidra.
According to
acharya Bhavamishra nidra is best for alleviating pitta dosha.

*NIDRA AS A
THERAPY*
Charakacharya
has described nidra in Astauninditiyadhya where eight types of undesirable
constitutions from the treatment point of view are mentioned. Among them
Atisthaulya And Atikrisha are especially undesirable constitutions because they
are always suffer with any disease.He has said that atisthula and atikrisha
purusa are to be treated by karshana and bringhana therapies respectively.
Nidra is included under brihana factors. That is why nidra is described here as
a therapy in the *management of karshya.*
Ayulink Ayurveda: Usually we discuss about anidra, but
atinidra is also a condition to focus. Atinidra can be a symptom of aama
condition.

Ayulink Ayurveda: Here in Europe due to addiction,
people sleep for long time
Do we have
any specific herb or formula which produces sleep? I mean dependable medicine
to prescribe in patient?

ordinary results from any asav arishta. On the contrary some times in makes
mind more active

is more common, but it has side effects and educated patients refer google for
it and denies
plus
sarpagandha can affect BP too.
Dr. Savad Kerala: Aswaganda arishta form is the
problem since it is little ushna aswa ganda gritha form or leha form will be
good
Dr.Pratibha Knere: Saraswatarista....gives good results

Dr. Dayanand Bothre: I used Saraswatarishta for Anidra
One of my
patient taking tab escitalopram 5 mg 2 tablet and tab lorazeram MD 2 mg at
night for sleep since 6 months after she came to me I advice her saraswatrishta
and tapyadi loha and lakshmi vilas ras with proper guidance and 10 days after
she got better sleep without allopathy medicine.
She stopped
allopathy medicine by herself only after getting good sleep
I think
overthinking of anything disturb the sleep if we can stop this overthinking by
proper guidance and bruhan karma of हिन मनोबल and हृदय दौर्बल्य by medicine

2168: Caraka su.21.52-54 describes methods
to induce sleep.
Branko Markovic: From western herb combination which
are working very good: lavender, rosemary, valeriana, vacha, melissa
officinalis. Mixed all together and drank as a tea 1 h before sleep. Also,
Ashwagandha is working in most cases but dose should be high like 5-9 capsules
before bed. Pranayam and meditation before sleep should be established, also
walking in nature or doing sport.

kerala based pharmacies...like santhigiri on anand nagar road Ahmedabad. Manasamitra
vadakam from kerala based pharmacies also very effective..
Dr. Rajnikant Patel: Mahish kshera (Buffalo milk) is
Nidrajanan as explained in Agreya dravya in charaka sutra sthana...
All medicine
with anupana as buffalo milk works good..
