Next topic of discussion: Copper toxicity # Ayurveda
Krishbhai: Copper toxicity also called copperiedus, is a type of metal poisoning caused by an excess of copper in the body. Copperiedus can occur from eating acidic foods cooked in uncoated copper cookware, or from exposure to excess copper in drinking water or other environmental sources.
Copper in the blood and blood stream exists in two forms: bound to ceruloplasmin and the rest "free loosely bound to albumin and small molecules. Nutritionally, there is a distinct difference between organic and inorganic copper, according to whether the copper ion is bound to an organic ligand.

Krishbhai: Ceruloplasmin is the major copper-carrying protein in the blood, and in addition plays a role in iron metabolism. Another protein, hephaestin, is noted for its homology to ceruloplasmin, and also participates in iron and probably copper metabolism. Acute symptoms of copper poisoning by ingestion include vomiting, hematemesis (vomiting of blood), hypotension (low blood pressure), melena (black "tarry" feces), coma, jaundice (yellowish pigmentation of the skin), and gastrointestinal distress.Individuals with glucose-6-phosphate deficiency may be at increased risk of hematologic effects of copper.Hemolytic anemia resulting from the treatment of burns with copper compounds is infrequent.  Chronic (long-term) copper exposure can damage the liver and kidneys.
Wilson disease and alzhimers disease are come diseases seen in copper toxicity..one of diagnostic future is Kayser–Fleischer rings (KF rings) are dark rings that appear to encircle the iris of the eye. They are due to copper deposition in part of the cornea (Descemet's membrane) as a result of particular liver diseases.
Copper reference ranges are as follows:
Free serum copper: 1.6-2.4 μmol/L or 10-15μg/dL
Total copper: 10-22 μmol/L or 63.7-140.12 μg/dL
Serum ceruloplasmin: 2.83-5.50 μmol/L or 18-35 μg/dL
24-hour urine copper 0.3-0.8 μmol or 20-50 μg
Liver copper 0.3-0.8 μmol/g of tissue or 20-50 μg/g of tissue
Ayulink Ayurveda: Many Ayurvedic formulas contain copper bhasma. Can it produce copper toxicity??
Vd. Sachin Kadlag: As per my information many pharmacies , now a days many pharmacies don't use  Tamra bhasma at  all  in products like Aarogyavardhini ...
Dr.Piyush Dodiwadiya: Copper sulfate is used as Rat poison. In case of poisoning- acute case of copper toxicity. Effects lever first And arogyavardhini is also used in lever disease, though it is due to KATUKI, but still we r using it.
Dr. Siva Kumar: It produces sterility. That's the reason for using in iucd
Vd Jigar Narsana: According to Julie Casper(2017), most copper toxicity cases has been traced to drinking water from corroded copper pipes. The corrosion of the pipes takes place due to the acidity and softness of the water. She adds that cooking acidic foods in copper pans or pots can also contribute to the toxicity of copper (Casper, 2017). Certain female contraceptives like oestrogens have been linked to a rise in copper levels in the body, leading to poisoning and toxicity (Casper, 2017).
Dr. Sujata Vaidya: Copper vessels are traditionally used in Indian homes for daily cooking. Can this cause toxicity?
Dr. Pranita Shah: Latest fad is to have drinking water stored in copper vessels. Fad as in the bottles which have replaced Tupperware.
Dr. Sujata Vaidya: So... is it healthy or not??
Shri Minoo parabia: In our houses in villages, our practice since time immemorial is to store water in couple of copper pitchers. So when, anyone visits after a long time may be, would get drinking water at odd hours.
We have trusted this water more than plastic bottle waters.
My mother passed away at the age of 90. I am 71 already. At times researches may come up with Naughty lists and then removing something from naughty lists......etc.....
Well, I am not an expert on this but shared just my personal experience and our old practice prevailing in hour house.
Of course we stored well water only not chlorinated water work's  water. Difference perhaps lies in the source too
Dr.Satish Panda: Ayurvedic bhasma if prepared as per text then all bhasma are free from toxicity. It is a form of nano medicine. Tamra(copper) bhasma is also save,if prepared as per textual guidelines
Gary Yuen: Copper is supposed to purify water. I'm unsure if any one source can be isolated from another. I think copper is an essential element though food sources may be enough.
The polluted world changes everything. Example: a study from Punjab lists corn/maize as a plant that highly absorbs copper from the soil. Various studies seem to point to pet food as a source of copper toxicity for animals. That may apply to us as well. Seems animal foods may be a higher source of copper than plants. Animals do tend to bio accumulate other toxins and that may be true for elements as well.
Dr. Siva Kumar: Water is drunk from copper vessels classically. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this...
Gary Yuen: Can't find anything in caraka or astanga Hrdyam sutrasthana. Some formulas mention use of copper vessels but no specific benefit mentioned i believe. A secondary source mentions for kapha. Multiple studies mention having antibacterial properties such as killing e. coli. That may be the classical reason though haven't seen it specifically mentioned. Some rasayana formulas mention making in a copper vessel.
Copper may be best traditional or most common for cleaning water but others work: a toxic effect of metal ions on living cells, algae, molds, spores, fungi, viruses, prokaryotic, and eukaryotic microorganisms, even in relatively low concentrations.[3] This antimicrobial effect is shown by ions of copper as well as mercury, silver, iron, lead, zinc, bismuth, gold, and aluminium  the power to control a wide range of molds, fungi, algae and harmful microbes.

If one consumes meat, possibly a good idea to brine or marinate with spices and liquid in copper.
Shri Minoo parabia: Appreciate the idea. Needs attention for research
Gary Yuen: There are many studies for treating liquid. Meat today we do not hunt ourselves and it is very contaminated. On pubmed there are a few studies covering e coli and salmonella and copper.
Shri Minoo parabia: Interesting
Gary Yuen: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6388137
Confirmed that at least by that study, excess copper is stored in the liver. Absorption, metabolism, and elimination might not be well studied (maybe there are new studies) but some mentioned: Vitamin C, some animo acids, zinc, selenium, and sulfur. I'd guess that to protect from copper toxicity, diet is the main factor. Whole grains dal and vegetables at every meal. Some amount of garlic and onion. Amalaki pomegranate mango capsicum papaya and other vitamin c sources.
Krishbhai: Shodhita tamra wont cause tat much effect..and there only minute amnt tat we will add.  We won't prescribe single tamra bhasma as medication in formutions we add other dravyas and give bhavanas for preparation.  So it won't cause tat much advers effect. Simple example is aroygavardhini vati.  We use this medicine almost all diseases..  In kushta our 1st prescription is that arogyavardhini. Then it's efficiency will reduces..  Tamra having lekhana guna so mala shoshana karma will reduce. In rat poisoning tablets asuddha tamra will be using.. But in medicinal purposes shusdha tamra in form of bhasma condition we are utilizing.
Dr. Rajendra Joshi: Sour things should not put in copper vessel. For water it's good
Krishbhai: Copper bottom vessels are being used only frm recent yrs.  But traditionaly bronze vessel wr being used.
