Ayulink: What is pippali? How can it be helpful? how to consume? what should be the dose?
Pradip hira: I used pippali with trifla in infants for continuous crying from a week (प्रतत रोदन, ज्वर ।। ग्रहबाधा लक्षण). I give trifla pippali with honey and ghee and within 2-3 hours crying was stopped. This yog is from Grah Badha (may be ROHINI).

Mona Patel: Pippali – Long Pepper is a very unique spice. It has all qualities of a typical spice like useful in indigestion, asthma, cough etc. it is also a very good aphrodisiac and anti-aging spice. Consider this – Pleehamaye Pippali – For all spleen related disorders, Pippali – Long pepper fruit is the best. “Pippali” is the term applied to the fruit of piper longum. This plant is indigenous to Northeastern & southern India and Ceylon and cultivated in Eastern Bengal.
Rasa (taste) – Katu (pungent)
Guna- Laghu, Teekshna (strong, piercing)
Vipaka- Madhura – Undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion
Veerya – Ushna – Hot potency. (wet variety has cold potency)
Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Kapha Doshas. (wet variety increases Kapha Dosha).
Long Pepper Side effects:
Long pepper should not be used in excess or for a very long period of time, without Panchakarma and Rasayana procedure. If used in excess without precaution, because of its heaviness (Guru) and liquefying properties (Prakledini), it causes Kapha increase. Because of its hotness, it increases Pitta Dosha and because of its less oiliness (Alpasneha) and hotness, it does not contribute to Vata balance. Hence, overall, it contributes to increase of Tridosha. Hence, not ideal for long term / excess consumption without Panchakarma procedure (like staying away from Sunlight, excess wind, with good amount of milk and ghee consumption etc).
Not ideal for people with Pitta Prakruti persons. It is best to avoided in infants. It can be used in children in a small dose of 250 mg per day, along with milk and ghee. It can be used in lactating mothers in lower doses. For use in pregnancy, medical advise is required. Pippali Rasayan Is a special treatment procedure, wherein long pepper fruit powder is given in a gradual increase and decreasing dose along with milk. This is extensively used in liver and spleen disorders. Read in detail about Pippali Rasayana. Ayurvedic medicines with Pippali as ingredient: Trikatu Churna – a combination of pepper, long pepper fruit and ginger – used in obesity, allergic rhinitis etc Guda Pippali – used extensively in liver disorders.
Home remedy for cough using long pepper. whether this can be used instead of chilly or pepper? In small quantities, of just half a gram a day, it can be used in place of chilly or pepper. for one or two months of time. Long pepper Home remedy for bloating and fullness of abdomen Intake of boiled barley along with half a teaspoon of long pepper + a teaspoon of ghee is useful to relieve bloating and gaseous distention of abdomen. Charaka Chikitsasthana 5th chapter. Long pepper for sexual strength: Vrushya Pippali: – Aphrodisiac remedy using long pepper fruit: Reference: Charaka Chikitsa Sthana 2.3/12-13. 30 Pippali fruits are made to a fine paste and fried with 1 Prakuncha (Pala = 48 ml) of oil and ghee. This is added with sugar and honey And to this, milk is poured directly from the cow udder. Dosage: 3 – 5 grams, once or twice a day, 10 minutes before food. Pathya: By taking Sastika rice along.

Ayulink:Yes, in small dose. May be a pinch with honey. Dose and duration depends on age and purpose. In Infants I have not used pippali but in kids we give either pippali or trikatu powder with honey.

Dr. Navneeth Krishnan: I haven’t tried this one, but in astanga hridya there is a reference about the use of either pipali or maricha churna with water in pravahika which is present for long time
Ayulink: This is very interesting reference. We have never tried Pippali in pravahika.

Vd. Gurumahantesh: Vardhamana pippali is used in rajayakshma. But can any one specify at what stage?

Vd.Avinash Chougule: In many compunds pippali is used as prakshep dravya. Piperine the alkaloid present in pippali is bioenhancer. So adding pipali in many compounds increases the potency n bioavailability of dosage form

Ayulink: Pippali is yogavahi and it is good to use in many conditions. It is like immuno-modulator. Then how can be deciding the dose of it.
Dr: Its katu rasa, madhura vipaka, guru guna. so if used in excess kapha will increase due to gurutwa and praklinnatwa...due to ushnatwa pitha will increase. ie y it should not be used in excess

Branko Markovic: What is the maximum doses in vardhamana pippali rasayana which you prescribed and what did you treat with it? We found that pippali rasayana along with nityananda ras or cruel capsules are working very good on cancer of breast, lungs, lymph nodes and some other cases. This is not rule but especially in initial stages is working good. Also pippali in shamana dose as prevention of cancer or for patient who are recovering after cancer.
Gary Yuen: Is pippalī vardhamāna rasāyana discussed anywhere besides Caraka? Are there any precautions, recommendations, or contraindications? I once self-administered it with wonderful effects. I did only about half of the procedure, stopping around day 9. I think the quantity of pippali can be taken multiple times throughout the day? I wasn't aware and tried taking it all at once; the taste was strong. I would assume fresh raw milk is better. For those that don't take milk, if one is healthy, could one treat it like a fast without milk?
Vd. Sachin Kadlag: I use vardhama pippali rasayana for chronic pratishyaya , tamak shwasa by ksheerpaak process. daily number of pippali is changed , milk and water proportion remains same ( each approximate 75 to 80 ml ). I give it for 25 days minimum number of pippali used daily are 1-2- 3-4-3-2-1-2-3-4-3-2-1 and so on till 25 th day.

Branko Markovic: Why is root preferred then fruit? Did you manage to subside it with only pippali ksheera paka and after how much time?

Dr. Bhavesh Modh: Root available in bulk. Easily stored for long time without fungus. Roots are more powerful than fruits. Fruits destroyed by fungus in moisture

Vd Rameshwar Dhanaji: In how much quantity pippali mul can be used. in market we get pippalimul in churna form. how to calculate then vardhaman matra?
Gary Yuen: Another source of pippali fruit is chinese medicine where it goes by the name of 荜茇. There it is easy to find. Unsure of quality.
Branko Markovic: Recommendation is to follow strictly sattvic diet during therapy. Also it is good to start with nitya virechan and to finish to remove any excess pitta from GIT. There are few variations in taking smaller dose. Mostly with bigger doses we can expect loose motion or vomiting. There is also method of just taking capsules of pure pippali along with milk on empty stomach or 3 times per day before meal also with milk. It could be taken from 2-2-2 to 8-8-8. Most patient will be comfortable with max dose of 10-15 g per day and that is also working wonders.
Gary Yuen: Thanks. I tried before with only pippali and milk. Food does seem possible though perhaps hours before or after pippali. Are there commonly noted effects? For example, I did the procedure til day 9 of 90 pippali fruits. One effect is I used to consume alcohol somewhat regularly and now can barely tolerate it. Perhaps some liver restoration occurred.
Ayulink: Pippali and pippali mul are both different things. In normal condition we use Pippali, which is a fruit of the plant. Pippali mul (root) are used in several conditions. But both are having different properties and different indications. Fruits (Pippali) are more strong and powerful.
