Dr. Sujata Vaidya: Energy medicine will prescribe water therapy for hernia. Totally cleansed intestine and heavy dose of natural vitamin D. Sunlight green dhaniya peepul and tulsi should help in most cases. When patients ignore obvious symptoms and rely on painkiller. ... then alone surgery can help... but not long term as symptoms usually reoccur.
Vd. Dhruti Kagrana: In shusrut samhita hearina described in nidan & chikitsa sthan. There are seven different types of vriddhi such as the Vataja-vriddhi, Pittaja-vriddhi, Kaphaja-vriddhi, Raktaja-vriddhi, Medaja-vriddhi, Mutraja-vriddhi and the Antra-vriddhi.
In antraja vriddhi sushrut aacharya says that the local Vayu enraged and unusually aggravated by lifting a great load, wrestling with a stronger person, violent physical strain or a fall from a tree and such like physical labour doubles up a part of the small intestine and presses it down into the inguinal regions lying there strangulated in the form of a knot (Granthi) which is known as Antra-vriddhi(inguinal hernia). The part not properly attended to at the outset descends into the scrotum which becomes ultimately elongated and intensely swollen and looks like an inflated air-bladder. It (hernia) ascends upwards under pressure, making a peculiar sound, (gurgling); while let free it comes down and again gives rise to the swelling of the scrotum.
Vd. Piyush Prajapati: I have one patient who had hernia.. I prescribed normal medicine and 7 days vasti of madhutailik Vasti.. that patient has totally relief since 2 years.. He has no symptoms now..

Dr. Swarup De: A hernia is defined as protrusion of whole or a part of a viscus through the wall that contains it. It can be explained in various ways, protrusion of a muscle (hiatus hernia), of brain through the fracture skull, herniated discs etc. But commonest variety of hernia is protrusion of a viscus or a part of it though the abdominal wall... Common varieties are inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional, epigastric etc.
Inguinal hernia in Ayurveda known as Antravridhi(Bradhna .. Caraka), comes out through the superficial inguinal Ring known as direct inguinal hernia. Indirect inguinal hernia comes out of the abdominal cavity through the deep inguinal ring, traverse all along the inguinal canal and ultimately becomes superficial through the superficial inguinal ring.
Inguinal hernia is said to be complete when the contents have reached the bottom of the scrotum. Otherwise the hernia is incomplete.
Femoral hernia comes out through the femoral canal and becomes superficial through the saphenous opening.
Umbilical hernia comes out through the umbilicus and closely related to the umbilicus. In Ayurveda it is Navi arsha.
Etiology : strenuous activity and underlying weakness of the abdominal muscles are the responsible for development of hernia.
C/O initial dragging and aching type of pain which gets worse as the day passes. Pain may appear long before the lump is noticed. Patient may only present only lump or swelling in the groin. When the hernia is strangulated, patient present with acute abdominal pain and also in case of obstructed hernia, the feature of intestinal obstruction will appear... Colicky pain, vomiting, abdominal distension and absolute constipation.
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: Agnikarma, Umbilical region massage of mahanaryan tail and castor oil, Tubbath of dashmul kwath, Vatanulomak drug, Mrudu virechan
Dr. Samir Suneri: I am applying Paste of tamakhu patra E/A for 7 days, in acute cases the result is very good , As well as pain also reduced
Dr. Swarup De: In Ayurveda, hernia is described under Briddhi roga which is of 7 types. Antrabriddhi is one of them which is similar to inguinal hernia. Charka mentioned it as Bradhna under Swathu chikitsa adhaya. Chakrapani : "antram muhu nireti swasthanad brisanm probisya cheti antrabriddhi lakshanam"
Aggravated and vitiated Vata dosa (intra abdominal pressure) displaced the part of antra or as a whole into the vankhan and brishan region and swelling occurs is known as antrabriddhi. Others Acharya also described same as Charak.
Treatment - Abhangya – oil, Vrichama or Vata anuloma - eranda oil etc , Lepa and niruha vasti -Bandhan - external pressure by cloth or belt -Shashisekhar rasa (Bhisaja ratnaboli) is quiet effective in this case... Prepared by Baidyanath pharmacy
Vd. Bhavesh Thakkar: - Vatanuloman, - nitya virechan – snehan, All according to dosh involvement. Some useful drugs- Erandbhrusta harde, Antra vriddhi har, gutika, Hingu, Hinhwadi churna, Vacha, Erand sneha, Gandharvahastadi kashayam
Vd. Krutika Suhas Chaudhary: In jamnagar...after sacrifice mice are used to make oil in RSBK Dept. Sir content/ ref.of antra vruddhi har gutika? Could Vegavidharan be the nidan of hernia???
Dr Bhagyashri Panchal: Very nice information about hernia...
Vd. Bhavesh Thakkar: @ krutika joshi madam, Anyravriddhi har gutika ref RTS
Dr. Binni Shah: Can anyone pls say about Nadi Pariksha for Hernia nidan ?
Vd. Shrinidhi: Sir with due respect to science i found In antar vriddhi difficult to get complete relief only surgery can be postponed
Germany Helga Fuchs: Me too. If there is only soft disturbing, it is possible to get good results. Basti, Massage, Nasya, Yoga, all for nuturing dhatu and relaxing the mind. Training for mind and body muscels to get more strenght. In other cases Operation is faster and shure. Here we have in simply "wateryhernia" the possibility for ambulance Operation. Takes around 20 minutes and Patient get a inner net for stabilising this area. After he can walk normal, no pain... Only to drive a car or to sit longer he have to avoid and not take heavy things. If ones apana and vyana works normal he can go to work next day. Doctors are doing this operation ambulant. Coming, Anästhesie, Operation, weak up time, after two hours Patient is on the way home. In big hernia it takes time and need to stay in Hospital. I would like it to know the exact time table, to heal big hernia only by Ayurveda treatment. Is it done without Agni karma in Ayurveda Hospitals too, ore only in doctors clinic? Very interesting.
Vd. Krutika Suhas Chaudhary: Sukumar kashyam gives gud relief frm pain n uneasiness in vriddhi(hernia ) cases
Vd. Bhavesh Thakkar: Sukumara kashayam …..very good choice for all pain in lower abdomen/back…….Saptasaram kashaym even better in such conditions. …Both ref. Sahasra yoga
Vd. Hardik bhatt: Can we consider Varicocele as raktaj vruddhi? Pls seniors give advice
Shri Minoo parabia: Mushak taila is also good for prolapsus. .....again a kind of VRIDDHI!
Vd. Piyush Prajapati: Uterine prolapse and rectal prolapse
Dr. Mahavir Patil: plz describe mushak tail
Dr. Prerak Shah: It's classical formula described in text book, which is made from dead rats.
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: I think prolapse and vridhi are different sir……Prolapse uterus or rectum are weakness of muscle and lost of elasticity…..Mushaktail matrabasti and local application with hoatwater katibatj….Mamsavah and majjavah srotas chiksta gave tremendous results…..for prevention of surgery
Vd Limesh Khatri: In Uterine prolapse it works on 1st grade prolapse only
Dr. Prerak Shah: But prolapse are not hernia. Rightly corrected by Dr. Bhadresh Naik.
Vd. Krutika Suhas Chaudhary: All are result of dhatu shaithilya....
Dr. Prerak Shah: So scholars of this group are diverted from the original subject. But was good discussion on prolapse to know. Good to continue again with hernia. Thnx
Dr. Mahavir Patil: but in herniation thr r also weakness and lost of elasticity of muscles
Vd. Krutika Suhas Chaudhary: Is der any role of vegavidharan...and dhatushathilya?
Dr. Prerak Shah: Important words to understand hernia are protrusion, strangulation or rupture - which are missing in prolapse.
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: Constipation, Over strain for defection, Heavy weight bearings, Vagavrodh, Long standing work, Weight lifters are prone for hearnia
Type of hernia: Inguinal, Umbilical, Hitus hernia, ?appendicitis herniated…….Any body know about agnikarma sight for hernia please guide with diagrams
Vd. Piyush Prajapati: Musaktail is specifically indicated for Gudbhransh- uterine prolapse. ..It's made from Mamsa dhatu of Rats.. समाने समान गूण वर्धनम .. So Vasti or LA (Pichu) of Musakoil makes Mansvardhanam of Uterus..
In short of Guna of mansdhatu like Strenth and elasticity increases. .. so by this way,it helps in Gudbhransh-Uterine Prolapse cz afterall it occurs bcz of lost of elasticity of Surrounding muscles…..
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: Use of western type toilet one of the causes of hernia and pelvic region disorder…….Because it's complete reverse of anatomical drawings…Ayurved clear the position is best
Vd. Piyush Prajapati: Just hold a balloon in ur both palm and fill air in that balloon.. keep pressure little from up and down. So what happens??
That balloons starts increase its size by side and side.. Same happens when undigested food is in stomach and rectum is fulfilled of stool bcz of constipation..
So air increases cz of fermentation of old stood.. so intestinal air pressure increases.. so this pressure starts to make intestine out from 3 holes.
Umbilicle and Inguinal rings..
Standing position and over thinking or overloading work increase this type of condition.. sometimes some persons r doing Loaded exercise in gym.. so this type of pressure increases which causes hernia..
My one patient is doing Meditation from 4-9am then bath and taking food..
Overloading meditation or kapalbhati also increase risk of hernia..
So diagnosed reason is must to find out
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: Very true, Due to wrong method of pranayam, Not even hernia but back problem cardiac arrests, Many complication may occur
Vd. Fulva Kubawat: Agreed with Naik sir and Prajapati sir, people take kapalbhati and pranayam for granted and it effects wrong on muscles , especially abs muscles. It causes muscle weakness...
Vd. Piyush Prajapati: Some people take huge quantity of water .. I think it also play a role in increasing risk of hernia bcz having too much water suddenly can damage elasticity of muscle. . any expert opinion ?? Water in morning especially
Dr. Arvind panchal: Constipation should be treated first...in hernia.
Dr. Arvind Shahane: In inguinal hernia Maharasnadi kwath with caster oil, and vruddhibadhika vati
Shri Minoo parabia: Water it self can constitute a discussion topic. So wait for future.
Dr. Satyendra Sharma: Sahtara,Giloa,Bhumi amla,Punarnava mixture in equal amount ,one table spoon twice in a day is very effective in all kind of Hernia.
Dr. Meghdoot Satvekar: Hernia - Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Depending on its cause, a hernia can develop quickly or over a long period of time. Common causes of muscle weakness include: failure of the abdominal wall to close properly in the womb, which is a congenital defective chronic coughing damage from injury or surgery Factors that strain your body and may cause a hernia, especially if your muscles are weak, include: being pregnant, which puts pressure on your abdomen)being constipated, which causes you to strain when having a bowel movement, heavy weight lifting ,fluid in the abdomen, or ascites suddenly gaining weight persistent coughing or sneezing .
Dr. Chirag: Antravriddhi : I am not a perfect person to talk on antravriddhi neither I hav much experience into it but wat I understand is as follow;
Nidana: To me it's a vata kapha prakopaj vyadhi
Samprapti : Any vridhi is basically bcz of kapha sangraha in d body. Bcz of overeating or untimely food or not following d ahara parichaya etc d gut isirritation with ksleshaka guna of kapha….. Any vridhi is given shape or cut out by vata dosha ….Aggravated apana vata ( bcz of any physical strain) and vyana vata (bcz of r any sort of nervous irritation or overwhelming psychological response) by chal n shukshma guna
Chikitsa : Regularise food habits, A light abdomen exercise, Avoid all type of physical or psychological strains, N regular light laxative like, vatanuloman Chikitsa, Regular pranayam practice to balance abdominal cavity pressure
Dr. Sharad, Disa: Pranayam like bhastrika is it advisable in pt. Of hernia?
Dr. Binni Shah: No not advisable
Dr. Sharad Disa: Then which yoga should be advised for hernia?? To strengthen muscles….Bcz as per my knowledge most of cases surgery is must
Dr. Binni Shah: Heavy breathing exercises are not adviaable in this case as it cause lot of pressure on stomach wall. One has to be very carefull in prescribing yoga for the same as it is helpful only at initial and uncomplixated stage. Uttanpadasan can strenthen abdominal wall muscle and the inguainal region muscles.
Dr. Bhadresh Naik: Vajrasan, Padmasan are best……..Vrajroli practice good
Dr. Sujata Vaidya: Agnisar pranayam in sukshme roop will help. Yogasan to strengthen hips shoulders initially. .. then gradually lower back. No asana directly in abdomen. Pranic healing has shown great progress in overcoming physical debility …….My own experience with soft lasers or photobiomodulation has been successful. This stimulates ATP ..
Vd. Fulva Kubawat: Muscles strengthening and kapalbhati prevent muscle weakening, but in later stage of hernia kapalbhati not advisable. Unnatpadasan is even better than uttanpadasan in abs strength. In hernia, ujjayi and anulom vilom pranayam could be done. It should be done under supervision..
Dr. Akshay Pundir: Very good information

Dr. Ravi Dewan: Lashun erandadi kashayam with vridhi vadhika vati.
Dr. Bhavesh Modh: A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. …Hernias are most common in the abdomen, but they can also appear in the upper thigh, belly button, and groin areas. Most hernias are not immediately life threatening, but they don’t go away on their own and can require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications.
Common Hernia Types
Inguinal hernias are the most common type of hernia. They make up about 70 percent of all hernias, according to theBritish Hernia Centre (BHC). These hernias occur when the intestines push through a weak spot or tear in the lower abdominal wall, often in the inguinal canal.
The inguinal canal is found in groin. In men, it is the area where the spermatic cord passes from the abdomen to the scrotum. This cord holds up the testicles. In women, the inguinal canal contains a ligament that helps hold the uterus in place.
This type of hernia is more common in men than in women. This is because a man’s testicles descend through the inguinal canal shortly after birth, and the canal is supposed to close almost completely behind them. Sometimes, the canal does not close properly and leaves a weakened area prone to hernias.
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of your stomach protrudes up through the diaphragm into chest. The diaphragm is a sheet of muscle that helps you breathe by contracting and drawing air into the lungs. It separates the organs in an abdomen from those in the chest.
This type of hernia is most common in patients over 50 years old. If a child has the condition, it’s typically caused by a congenital (birth) defect. Hiatal hernias almost always cause gastroesophageal reflux, which is when the stomach contents leak backward into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation.
Umbilical hernias can occur in children and babies under 6 months old. This happens when their intestines bulge through their abdominal wall near their bellybutton. may notice a bulge in or near child’s bellybutton, especially when they’re crying.
An umbilical hernia is the only kind that often goes away on its own, typically by the time the child is 1 year old. If the hernia has not gone away by this point, surgery may be used to correct it.
Incisional hernias can occur after abdominal surgery. Your intestines may push through the incision scar or the surrounding, weakened tissue.
Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain.
Dr.Yogesh Gorakhnath Patil: Trikatu churna 25 gm, Praval pisti 10 gm, Godanti bhasma 10 gm - Mix them well and divide the mixture into 60 parts and make 60 pouch of equals quantity take 1 pouch twice daily with honey in empty stomach.
2. Take Sarvakalpa kwath 3)Take 2-2 tablets twice daily of following medicines after meals with warm water…Vardhibadhika bati tab, Kanchnar gugule tab
Truptesh Choksi: Is there really case where by medicine it is cured. I have undergone for surgery. That's why asking.
Canada Vd Priti Patel: I personally think, it's anatomical problem, so you can't treat with medications. But medicines definitely help you to get rid of symptoms .. Like in umbilical hernia, some medicines treat your digetion problem, so you don't need for surgery. ……..My personal opinion
Vd. Nidhi Awasthy: Dashmool kwath with erand sneh is helpful
Vd. Vishal Patel: Varunadi kwath(gulma rog) is very effective and tested medicine in hernia.
Vd. Amit Mahajan: Varunadi Kwath with Kanchnaar Gugullu & Vridhibhadhika Ghan Vati
Dr. Bhavesh Modh: Sushrut chikitsha ch.19, Treatment of inguinal hernia ….given treatment as वातशामक & बल्य (1) cow's milk + castor oil till 1 month (2) अग्नि कर्म see 21 श्लोक (3) try cupping = हिजाब or leach = जलौकावचरण for रक्तमोक्षण see 24 श्लोक . For small, non-strangulated and non-incarcerated hernias, various supports and trusses may offer temporary, symptomatic relief.
However, the best treatment is herniorrhaphy (surgical closure or repair of the muscle wall through which the hernia protrudes).
There is a traditional Indian deep-massage techniques on Marma ( see 24 , रक्तमोक्षण area & 23 पादागुष्ठ मध्य ) points on the neck to tone up the muscles and relieve the pressure on the hernia area.
"Hernia repair, one of the most common surgical procedures, carriesa risk many patients don't consider: chronic pain after surgery. More than 30% of patients may suffer from long-term chronic pain and restricted movement after surgery to fix a hernia" -Wall Street Journal.
Research by International Journal of Yoga that reports "significant effectiveness"of Yoga therapy in reversible inguinal hernia.
Gentle yogic stretching in static and dynamic form is ideal for gradually strengthening weak abdominal peritoneum with profuse supply of oxygenated blood that nourishes, activates, tones and strengthens. This improves muscle tensile strength which prevent displacement of internal organs. Exercise as a Hernia solution will also ensure that the Hernia does not recur in adjacent area which is also quite common.
CAUTIONs: 1 The following yoga Exercises are not suitable for Hiatal Hernia. 2.Practice the following yoga regularly. YOU MUST support the hernia region with your free palm while you exercise. 1.पवनमुक्तासन (pavanmuktasana), 2.उत्थान पादासन (uttanpadasana), 3.उडीयान बंध (uddiyan bandh), Rest in शवासन or व्रजासन (shavasana or vajrasana), Yoga Hernia Treatment without surgery will need 1-3 months .
Vd. Nidhi Awasthy: Cupping place Dr Modh
Dr. Bhavesh Modh: સારણગાંઠ = Hernia (inguinal ) – ear piercing in childhood (Age group 1 to 7 yrs) is traditional practice ( particularly in West Raj.& north Gujarat. )…in first place this may sound awkward..but Sushrut chikitsa sthan 19 / 24…. Description is there to make rakta mokshana from ear lobe…..ear piercing may be a mild version of this treatment, which is now popular and practiced in many parts
Dr. P. A. Deshpande: A specific type of exercise using flat flexible strip for the treatment of cerebral palsy, dimensia and Parkinson's disease is used by me with excellent results
Dr. Amal JP: Local Pichu with karpooradi taila or narayana taila is beneficial in hernia
Usa Dr. Vaduvur S. Narayan: Almost all direct and indirect inguinal hernias, depending on size , duration and symptoms may need surgery. They could be prevented with Ayurveda diet, avoiding constipation and eliminate junk food and drink plenty of fluids and avoiding constipation with high fiber diet etc. I am trained in Allopathic medicine, but Ayurveda is great for preventing most diseases of life style. I so much respect Ayurveda and the wisdom it provides
Dr. Nikhil Baxi: In umbilical hernia, nabhi puran helps. also higvashtak churna mix in caster oil massage locally at imbilical region circular motion helps lot. Gulma chikitsa useful. But in strangulated hernia surgery best option.
Dr. Ravi Dewan: Lashun erandadi kashayam with vridhi vadhika vati.
Dr Sandeep Madaan: I don't yet understand the role of vriddhi vadhika vati in hernia.how does it help
Mrugesh j. parikh advocate: I am really impressed about the discussion going on the topic of hernia... I will be obliged if any one can suggest the treatment of umbilical hernia as i am suffering from the same
