Next topic for discussion: #Management of Short vision or eye - vision problems with ayurveda
Dr. Ravindra Upadhyay: Let us think of the reasons first. It is genetically inherited disease?  Contaguineous marriages is responsible for that.
Dr. Abha. l. Ravi: We can use thriphala ghrith with sapthamritha loha.daily intake of thriphala choorna with ghritha and madhu at bedtime
USA Gary Yuen: Don't know. That could may be take many many generations. Liver problems? I use sevanti/chrysanthemum as tea daily. There is also evidence psychology stress and personality might be a factor.Chinese medicine also says sevanti tea with goji berries is good for eyes. Also a good rasayana.External: rose water drops, castor oil drops, triphalā wash. Internal: guduchi, shatavari, daruharidra, chrysanthemum, aloe vera-  Pole, Sebastian. Ayurvedic Medicine Human milk as wash is also supposed to be good. Would that be more for a specific dosha?
LVG Shriram Gandhi: Eye wash with Triphala water is commonly used.
Dr. Suyog Kulkarni: The Triphala Ghrita which we use for netra tarpan is Yogawahi Triphala ghrita.
USA Gary Yuen: Other washes: 1. Triphalā, sarsaparilla and turmeric 2. Barberry and raw honey, or just raw honey 3. Punarnavā decoction with rose water 4. Chandrodaya varti 5. Triphalā ghee 6. Pravāl piṣhti 7. Saptamrita loha (iron ash) Does oil nasya help?
Colombia Dr Mario Herrera, Neiva, Huila: How do you prepare the triphala, sarsaparrilla and turmeric wash?
USA Gary Yuen: I would guess like triphala water. Haven't tried but seems like good idea. Boil and then filter? For how long? 20 min? Boil to reduce? How is triphala water made?Read a little. Seems nasya is good for eyes but don't know which conditions. Probably good for eye health. In that case, any preferable oils? Any herbs to avoid?
Vd. Dhruti Kagrana: Nasya is helpful in eye disease. In charaka samhita Nasya is mentioned in Timira, Vartamagata roga, Akshi roga..( CH. Si.2/22)
Dr. Nayan Thacker: nasay with anu oil & netra tarpan with jivantyadi oil
USA Gary Yuen: I have some oils for hair like mahabhringarj and kesh taila. And a Western ayurvedic massage oil with bala vacha shatavari ashwagandha and more. Would any oil that is tridoshic and non-warming generally ok?
Ayulink: These oils may be good for hair massage but may not be effective on eye sight
USA Gary Yuen: Because of our modern life and processed foods, and unhealthy oils, many vegetarians have higher than normal blood pressure. That can effect eyes like easy fatigue even if there aren't any serious conditions. Flax and hibiscus  tea are good for that. B12 may also have some effect.
Ayulink: I don't think any head massage or hair massage have direct effect on vision. Head massage nourishes brain and may be indirectly helpful. But never seen / heard direct effect on eye sight - short vision
USA Gary Yuen: I was thinking using those for nasya. Since none increase pitta, may be ok.
Ayulink: Nasya with oil having Vacha as ingredient? Please be careful. This can be risky. May cause several complications. Vacha can produce very good effect as well as very fast side effects or complications, including neurological disturbance. Please be careful. You will need proper knowledgable and experienced Vaidya for it.
Ayulink: Sorry to warn you, but this (Nasya)is my area of work (expertise). So I felt it is good to share my thoughts with you. Many commercial products are not having clinical trials, and may not be safe.
Dr. Jyoti Ashok: Sir,pl.elaborate on ur experience with vacha nasya.
Ayulink: With Vacha nasya:- Pt. can suffer with Anaphylactic shock (A widespread and very serious allergic reaction. Symptoms include dizziness, loss of consciousness, labored breathing, swelling of the tongue and breathing tubes, blueness of the skin, low blood pressure, heart failure, and death. Immediate emergency treatment is required for this type of shock, including administration of epinephrine in the case of bee or wasp stings).
Dr. Sachin Utpat: Sir how it occurs? Samprapti? And for how much dose?
Ayulink:  I don't know, how it occurs. But it occurs. I have seen in many cases. May be excessive pitta aggravation.
Vd. Sachin Kadlag: Message at soles of feet (पादाभ्यंग)  is beneficial for eyes.
Dr. Anuja Marwar: Netra tarpna with triphla ghrita. akshi sekam with triphala powder, nasya and shirodhara is very effective in eye problem. And also the foot masaage is very benifecial
USA Gary Yuen: It is supposed to be for all doshas and first ingredient is shatavari. Other oils are for hair and might be safe.
Dr Jayesh Patel: Sir for better vision use jivantyadi ghreet or jivanti churn & Dashamrut haritaki churn gives a excellent result
USA Gary Yuen: Are there any texts that show areas of foot and how they correspond to body? In Chinese medicine, bottom half of two middle toes are for eyes. http://www.chinesefootreflexology.com/wp content/uploads/2013/03/Eyes.jpg
Unfortunate many commercial oils are not pure or tested. Even spices like turmeric and i think others now have heavy metals and are contaminated.
Dr. Malathi Arjun: Eyewash with triphala qwath.Netra tarpanam with patoladi ghritam.Sapthamrith loham orally
USA Gary Yuen: Of pure oils for nasya, are any better? Ghee sesame coconut castor? Would it vary with dosha? Eye problems can by any dosha but maybe any kapha oils might be inappropriate.
Vd. Kinshuk Hirpara: Research has found that spending time playing outside as a child may reduce your chances of becoming short-sighted, and existing short-sightedness may progress less quickly…This may be related to light levels outdoors being much brighter than indoors. Both sport and relaxation outdoors appear to be beneficial in reducing the risk of short-sightedness…Spending a lot of time focusing your eyes on nearby objects, such as reading, writing and possibly using hand-held devices (phones and tablets) and computers can also increase your risk of developing short-sightedness. Which is also considered as digital eye strain. I have cure couple of patients with internal treatment of Saptamrita loha which contains iron, godanti bhasm which contains calcium , dodi ghan which contains Beta carotene and vit A…Along with foot massage with cow ghee.Walking bare foot on green grass and meditation also helps to improve imbalanced Doshas.
USA Gary Yuen: Of being outside in the sun, that may be important at age. Modern doctors say CoQ10 important for eyes. After eating vegetables, i think one study says our bodys from chlorophyll make coq10 when outside in sun. There may be other more important factors but that seems one.
Vd. Dhruti Kagrana: Netra roga nidana in samhita:-
Su.ut. ta 1/26-27..Prasakta samrodhana -crying always, being sad always, Kopa - anger, shoka -  unhappines, klesha- depression, abhigatha -accidents or truma, shukta and aranala -fermented drinks, kulattha -horsegram,masha-blackgram,vega nigrahana -suppression of natural urges, ati sweda(sweating),dhuma nisheva -excessive smoking, chardivighata -controlling of vomiting,  vamana atiyoga therapy -excessive vomiting when given as therapy, supressing of ashru(crying), immediately entering in cold water after exposing to sun( heat).
Dr. S. K. Rai: I firmly believe the netra vasti  (triphala ghritam) followed by nasya with Anu tailam can do wonders, netra vasti helps in strengthening the cilliary muscles and removes the engorgment by its exosmosis process.Ocular tension is taken care off. Further grit happens to be Pitt shamak it helps to reduce the infections, finally the site is improved.
USA Gary Yuen: If through the nose herbs are absorbed more readily, are commercial anu taila formulas of ok quality?Caraka Su 5.46 mentions fumigation. This is breathing the smoke of burning herbs?
Vd. Dhruti Kagrana: Myopia(short vision) occurs when light is focused in front of the retina. It occurs because either the eyeball is too long, or because the cornea is too curved. Despite maximum flattening of the lens, the eye is not able to focus the light rays further back, and on to the retina…Refractive error of the eye - Myopia may be co-related to Timira in Ayurveda…Aalochaka pitta resides in eyes responsible for vision. Disturbances of pitta with vata dosha causes vision problems.Because of causes like lack of proper diet, alochak pitta and dhatus  in eyes do not receive proper nourishment and therfore fail to perform their functions properly…In Timira pathya Aahara:..Purana ghruta( old ghee), Triphala, Satawari, Patola, Mudaga, Aamalaki,Yava.(su.ut.17/48)
Dr. Pankaj Wankhade: NetraTarpan with triphala ghat, nasya, saptamruta loha & sarswati vati for all urdhvjatrugat rog...
Vd. Khyati Jariwala: Nabhi puran vid trifla ghrut or simple cow ghee improves eye sight
Dr. Jyoti Ashok: Relation between Eyes and Paada :
The two sira's which are present in paadamadhya carries the benefits of the abhyanga, udwarthana, lepana etc... to the eyes…The accumulation of mala in paada, heat, injury, compression of feet etc.. will harm the eyes leading to dristi dosha. To prevent this one should wear footwear, do abhyanga and should keep feet clean.Reff AHU- 16/66
Dr. Khushbu Patel: Nasya and tarpan of triphla ghee is very effective. eye exercise is also beneficial.
Vd. Dhruti Nirav Bhatt: Saptamrutloh ,Jivantyadi ghrit for Netra tarpan and foot message. Amlaki is best for Eyesight .Pranayam gives good result .
Vd. Sandeep J. Prasad: Trifladi churn mentioned in arya bhisag at bed time with ghee and honey unequal amount has good result in all eye disorders.
Dr. Uday H. Hanagal: Netra r jnyanendriya, Situated in kapha sthana (shira), Sight of Alochaka pitta(2types chakshurvaisheshika, buddhirvaisheshika), So Vagbhatacharya explains in Sutrasthana Dinacharya Adhyaya how much importance is there for Nityaabhyanga of shira, shravana, pada (urdhwa moola adaha shakha--bhagavadgeeta) to get benefits(Indriya patava etc.). This is for Swastha purusha, In eye problems so many techniques r explained in A.H. Uttarasthana.
Dr. Arvind Shahane: Trifla jal wash- Trifalachurna 1tsf +Ghrit 1tsf +Honey 1/2 tsf. All mix n take at night .Good result for vision.
Vd. Hardik bhatt, Idar: Pad abhyang . With cow'sghee or trifla ghrit or jivantyadi ghrut is good for eyes . In texts says :- charanseva is good for eyes . So, padabhyang, good shoes or chappals , adi used for eye disorders ..
Dr. Madhuri Patil Chaudhari: Padabhyang.. with cows ghrut and copper small pot, copper with oxygen ..oxygen is released in -ve ion form so beneficial my view though may not sound scientific. ( Cu+ O2= CuO+ O.... not balanced equation but  for purpose of understanding) reduces positive ion poisoning,  How, Dont know. Tratak and Sinhmudra best of Focus and Accomodation functions of eyes .
Dr. Uday H. Hanagal: Triphala rasayana-- Triphalachoorna+Ghritha+Madhu (can be added according to the person need r condition), can be taken in night just before going to sleep ( Urdhwa jatru vikareshu swapnakale prashasyate--A.H.Sutrasthana). Acts as mruduvirechaka  & rasayana for netra also (Bahukalpam bahugunam sampannam  yogyamoushadham).
Dr. Amal JP: Treatment Protocol for Hriswadrushti (Myopia)  1)Netradhara with Kasyapam ks or Triphala ks 2)Nasya with Anu tailam or ksheerabala 101 3)Sirodhara with balaswagandhadi tailam or lakshadi keram or sasanka tailam 4)Eye massage with ksheerabala 21 5)Tarpanam with Triphala gritham or kashyapa gritham or jataveda gritham 6)Aschothanam with the same medicine of tarpana  . Dr. Dayanand Bothre:

Vd. Amol Hingmire: Musta+ Amruta satva+ kamal +bilva+shatavari+kutki+amalki bij majja-For all types of netra rog & Bruhadwasakadi kashya
Dr. Ujwala Said: Myopia in children can be genetic disorder maybe strains of tuberculosis maybe the cause. Vitamin A needed for color vision to see in dim light protects the corneal surface
USA Gary Yuen: Yes. Good sources carrot sweet potato green vegetables coriander leaves yellow squashs pumpkin. Many. Maybe all green leaves including tulsi.
Dr. Ujwala Said: Tomatoes whole milk mangoes also
USA Gary Yuen: Many foods will have vitamin A bit highest are yellow orange vegetables like carrot and sweet potato and 2nd are green vegetables.
USA Gary Yuen: Some foods ranked by vitamin A. http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=106
I did not think of mango but yes because it is orange or is very high.  A list of many Indian foods.http://www.fitjog.com/indian-nutrition-charts/vitamin-a-rich-grains.php
USA Gary Yuen: Moringa leaves also possibly very high but not tested.
Dr. Yogin Patel: I had hear from old man - shivambu reduce number of myopia .  any one have any experience?I had heard from old man - shivambu reduce number of myopia .  any one have any experience?
Dr. Ravindra Upadhyay: Regarding eyes one can take experience of Sun Gazing. Daily early morning in the 1 st hr after sunset look at the sun without spectacles for 10 minutes.similarly in the evening in the last 1 hr before sunset one has to do Sun gazing for 10 minutes. One gets lot of benefits in general and drshi pt of view.
Dr. P. A. Deshpande: Shivambu treatment  for eyes or otherwise  also  is harmful.  Urine contains many toxins and it harms. This is my personal experience as well as pts survey. I have used for five years  with hearing loss due deposits of  salts. Shivambu  helps only if one is only on cow milk, fruits and vegetables  (raw) without any external additives . Person should not be on any medications and addiction.I  also need this info.
Australia Vd. Neerja Ahuja: I would think that the cows get so many chemicals that even that may not be necessarily good.
-----------------CASE DISSUCION RELATED TO EYES DISORDERS---------------
USA Dr. Archana Vardhan: I share one patient's medical history related to netraroga
Patient had problem since nov 2015. There was inflammation of optic nerve, bleeding and retinal detachment .He received steroid injections and till date he has got 3. Doctors here in US are giving him drops for glaucoma too. His current concern is with so much eye pressure he is not allowed to take those injections which gives him relief n is now developing cataract in both his eyes. He is not able to read nor been able to work on the desk.
..This is the image
Dr. Nayan Thacker: how can we help in this pt..?8 yrs child…
USA Dr. Archana Vardhan: He took some ayurvedic treatment in india which helped him in reducing eyepressure and inflammation
Dr. Rajendra Joshi: May be hemophilia. Bleeding is there
Dr. Uday H. Hanagal: Nidana parivarjana (intake & external usage of allopathic medicines & aahara, viharajanya), to reduce inflamation, bleeding Shatavaryadi ghrita 1/2 tsp + to get good vision Jeevantadi ghrita 1/2 tsp with 1 small cup of milk + 1/2 tsp red sugar candy powder ( just before going to sleep in night)both r Pitta, Vata hara. External abhyanga with plain ghrita on head & legs  in morning before bath…Will netra tarpan work in this condition. This is Apatarpanajanya inflamatory Haemorrhage condition so mrudu Abhyanga of plain Ghrita half an hour before the bath can helpful.
Dr. P. A. Deshpande: To reduce optical pressure  prepare a paste of triphala churna  and apply on eyelids , all surrounding areas including fore head  at bed time clean in morning.  The contracting  action will reduce pressure.  During day time soak cotton pack in triphala water n put ice pack on it. This will also help pressure reduction. Bowel clinsing is must.  Only mild treatment will give good effect.  Carrot beet root and palak juice will help nutritional support.  Curcumin cap. 125 mg two cap three times a day will help stopping bleeding tendancy.  Tarpan with simple grut will also help
Dr. Amal JP: Thakradhara with musta-amalaki kashayam and thalam with kachooradi choornam in nimbamrutadi eranda tailam is beneficial to decrease IOP and bleeding
USA Dr. Archana Vardhan: I have never tried this combination .How does that works?
USA Gary Yuen: As certain herbs decrease IOP. So there are likely many foods that either increase or decrease pressure. While it may be much effort to determine them, a comprensive monitoring and change in diet with viewing results should help.
Australia Vd. Neerja Ahuja: I have a client with left eye lenses damaged n removed by mistake during operation for cataract few years ago. Eye still waters , can go red sometimes if working too much on computer, n there is almost no vision in that eye. What can be given for support ? Taking triphala regularly.
Vd. Tapan: Madhukpushpa churna, Kapardika, Saptamrutloh With Madhu and goghruta. Twice a day with goat milk. For three months. Goghrut paadatala abhyanga with goghrut and Kansya paatra( katoree) for three month should solve the above said problem I think.
USA Gary Yuen: Not sure but sevanti is known for eye health and liver pitta. Eyes: Chrysanthemum morifolium is a specific remedy for eye inflammation, swelling, redness, dryness and itching as it regulates ālocaka and rañjaka pitta. Specifically indicated for conjunctivitis, styes and inflamed eyelids from eczema and red eyes. It makes the eyes bright and beautiful (Frawley & Lad 1994).
- Pole, Sebastian. Ayurvedic Medicine: The Principles of Traditional Practice.
USA Gary Yuen: If only one eye has problems, for intense use such as computers, why not wear eye patch and use only one eye.
Australia Vd. Neerja Ahuja:  Yes now they have advised not to touch the eye due to scarring
USA Gary Yuen: Or wear sometimes so eye can rest. Closing eyes such as when taking bus can also help rest.
Australia Vd. Neerja Ahuja: Eye gets watery not dry
Germany Helga Fuchs: One Client will come to me next week for special eye treatment what I do. No Ayurveda treatment.  Left eye is dark, due laseroperation, right is little better, after op doctor is using some oil as permanent for some days, now Dr take oil out and Client have problems with Air in the lenses. It will heal in the next day, Dr say. Now I wait for the next days to see, before I start my work.
Problem is that she have Diabetes and by this her eyes getting Bad. She is taking Insulin. Now, I only told her on phone she have to loose wight ( 15 kg) and she can take in the next day tumeric decoction for her Diabetes, because about the Stress her sugar is very high. I know how to do nasya. Akshitharpan, and other ayurvedic treatment. But she comes for this special eyetreatment what is without any medicine. Can anyone give some suggestions about her Diabetes?
Dr. Nitish Dubey:  Sir r u asking about Lyme disease??I had progressive changes in error of refraction  with raised I.O.P. about 15 yrs back. Was diagnosed as glaucoma. Iotim e/d was not effective. Then Lumigan e/d.But I.O.P. always remained to higher side. I consulted one senior ayurvedic consultant. He started-  Panchamrut parpati, Pathyadi kwat,  Agasti prash, Virechana/Raktamokshana S.O.S.With this my I.O.P. became absolutely normal.I changed Ophthalmologist. He stopped Lumigon e/d bec.fundus, Perimetry & C.T.reports are stable. Still taking Pathyadi kwath regularly.& No other Alopathy medicine for I.OP.
USA Dr. Archana Vardhan: Case history of a 50 year old patient. According to him his problem started when he accidentally put the ear drop into his eyes for consecutive 3 days. which precipitated giving him puffed eyes, redness and itching. He consulted ophthalmologist who gave him the medicine ( name he is not sure) which gave him relief. So now his problem is.. He first gets lot of itching in his eyes which is uncontrollable and preceded by puffiness around his eyes. Does anyone suggest that what's the reason and cure for it?
USA Gary Yuen: Amalaki has also been shown to reduce need for insulin. Good diet is best. There are Western doctors who have used diet of dal vegetables whole grains nuts seeds and have removed diabetes from many people. Even some that have had diabetes for 30 years and after two weeks or more, no need for medicine and diabetes is gone. Using herbs as other than complement to good and other changes is similar to allopathy, not treating the cause. Barley is also the main treatment in all cases of prameha.
Dr. Uday H. Hanagal: In prameha poorvaroopa we seen Hrudaya, Jihwa, Netra liptata of Kapha, So person vision problem is starts from here, To remove this aavarana (liptata), intake of  Panchakola choorna kashaya or phanta or Panchakola taila before going to bed in night is good
Dr. J. T. Contractor: Avastin injection was given to my wife for a blurred vision due to eye pressure, few small drops of blood oozed out on visionary lens, specialist did retinopathy to burn the blood openings! All in vain
Germany Helga Fuchs: What do you mean with dal vegetables. Dhal and vegetables? Please give detaillet Information.
USA Gary Yuen: Yes dal and vegetables. I am not sure what is best. Urad and rajma are more strengthening and also have more minerals like calcium but are heavy. Seems like kapha so probably best barley gavedukha and mong dal. Vegetables could be no potatoes but carrots taro beets purple yam turnip other roots etc, mehti leaves cauliflower broccoli morninga leaves coriander leaves spices ginger turmeric garam masala ginger pippali others. No oil of any kind. Boil as soup and use sauces like small amount of walnut cashew flax almond. Fruit. If ghee is not made from raw milk, maybe no ghee. See book the end of diabetes by Joel furhman. He believes less grains, are better for weight loss. Most diets start with rice millet wheat or other grains and then less dal and vegetables. More dal and vegetables and less grains might even be healthier. I am not sure but am trying it. Total salt in one day i am trying less than 500 mg. More sour fruits like grapefruit amalaki lemon and mango and less sweet fruits might also faster reduce ama.
USA Gary Yuen: I still eat red rice but my grains might be 40% gavedukha 25% rice and rest barley and millet. For weight loss more gavedukha and barley and less others. More mong dal and less others. Many traditional diets have meat as 1-5% of diet. Possible 1 kg total or less each month. Very little seems good. In those cases vitamin b12 is very important. People in villages maybe drink river water so didn't need b12.
Germany Helga Fuchs:. Do you have any experience that eyes get better with this diet if problems of eyes occur from Diabetes ?
Dr. Sachin Utpat: There are two types of disorders of eyes according to ayurved. One due to problem itself in the eyes and second due to effect of other systemic disorder. That's why sushrutacharya coverd netra rog in few pages while modern ophthalmology takes few thousand pages…So it is important to diagnose properly.
USA Gary Yuen: No experience but if person strictly follows diet and diabetes goes away, eyes should get better. As far as kind of diet, that is the ayurvedic kind. Why are not all doctors doing such things so they have no excess of any dosha? For instance, Caraka says diet is the true cause of most diseases and also lists other causes. For diabetes, the chapter on prameha says yava barley is the main treatment in all cases. Many things in Caraka few people follow. Su 5 also has a short list of what to eat regularly and Su 25 also has much info.
